Songs for the Silver Screen

Following Dave’s look at singers who act and actors who sing it is fitting that the next branch on the Music Tree is Film Soundtracks. This week we will be listening to music from movies, and our album is the soundtrack for the 1956 film The King and I.

The King and I has its origins in the memoirs of an English widow who was governess to the King of Siam’s children and wives in the 1860s. These memoirs were adapted into a novel that in turn inspired a stage musical, and our soundtrack is from the film version of that musical. Both the film The King and I and its soundtrack were hugely successful, with the film winning five Academy Awards, including the award for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture. Happy listening!
