Perfectly Pop

Monday has dawned, musical explorers, and it is time to move our adventure up the Music Tree to a new genre. So join us this week, as we investigate the aural delights of Pop music. But what are we listening to? Well, following on from his introduction of Chuck Berry last week, John Lennon also has something to say on this weeks artist, so take it away John:

“Before Cliff and the Shadows there had been nothing worth listening to in British music.”

One wouldn’t want to argue with John Lennon, so this week’s album is Cliff by Cliff Richard and the Drifters (later known as the Shadows). This album was recorded in front of a live studio audience, hence the screams (you’ll know what I mean when you listen to it!), and released in 1959. Cliff contains the single Move It, which as well as being Cliff Richard’s first hit, is widely regarded as the first Rock ‘n’ Roll track produced outside the USA.

For any fellow explorers wondering how they can join the musical adventure without splashing the cash, Dave has created a Spotify playlist of music from the Music Tree, including this week’s Cliff. Happy Listening!
