The first month or so of our musical adventure focussed on music from America. Many of the early influences on popular music can be traced to the USA, but while the American artists were breaking with musical tradition, fledgling British bands were listening and developing their own take on the new styles of music. In the mid-1960s this wave of creativity burst onto the international music scene, and the British Invasion was born.
One band that made it big in the invasion were also pioneers of a new genre. This band mixed the improvisational Blues style typical of Chess Records acts with the new Rock ‘n’ Roll sound to make this week’s genre, Blues Rock. They were the Rolling Stones, and this week we will be listening to their debut album of 1964, the eponymous The Rolling Stones; feel free to listen too.
