Where Did Our Love Go by the Supremes is a wonderful listen.
The singing is fantastic and you can’t help but fall in love with the voices of the Supremes. Sweet and innocent, yet passionate and seductive, the vocals are beautiful. I can’t understand how such delightful voices could suffer such pain that they sing of. This record is not just about the singing, the music is fantastic too. There is a great beat, from the handclaps that open the record right through to the drumming of Ask Any Girl that closes it. The strings and trumpeting help create that distinctive ‘Motown Sound’.
Many of the songs tell of heartbreak, but there is a cheeriness in the music that says the women are dealing with it. The powerful singing style of Long Gone Lover suggests that the Supremes are not just dealing with it, but well over him. However, as the record progresses, this cheeriness disappears, revealing a soulful cry. These women have been hurt, and this emotion is what produces such a great record.
