Animal Madness

Musical explorers, it’s time to get a bit crazy. This week’s genre is Psychedelia, a genre renowned for its trippy sounds and outlandish lyrics. It is claimed that Psychedelic music attempts to recreate the effects of hallucinogenic drugs, so here’s hoping we can keep our feet on the ground long enough to listen to Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys.

Pet Sounds was the Beach Boys’ ninth album, and it was a significant change in musical direction for the band. The album was written by band leader Brian Wilson, who had recently ceased touring with the Beach Boys to focus on writing new material. Wilson claims Pet Sounds was heavily influenced by the just-released Rubber Soul from the Beatles; when writing Pet Sounds he aimed to imitate and improve upon the unified way in which Rubber Soul‘s tracks form a whole album. The result was a far cry from the Surf Pop sound that the Beach Boys were known for and upon release it failed to sell as well as the band hoped, but Pet Sounds was hugely critically acclaimed, and is often cited as one of the greatest albums of all time. Enjoy!
