The Key to R&B

This week Dave and I will be listening to Stevie Wonder’s signature album Songs in the Key of Life. This is a hugely successful album; Stevie Wonder received seven Grammy nominations for it, four of which he won. Songs in the Key of Life was the second best-selling album of 1977 and Stevie’s third consecutive album to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

Songs in the Key of Life represents R&B in our Musical Adventure. R&B is often used as a blanket term for genres like Funk and Soul, which appear independently on the Music Tree. Many modern artists like Beyoncé, Usher and Rihanna are described as R&B musicians, but this contemporary R&B is usually considered as a separate genre to the R&B of the pre-Disco era. We will be listening to Songs in the Key of Life until Sunday; feel free to join us.

Each week Fran and Dave explore a new genre from the Music Tree by choosing an album to represent it. We write about the genre or artist during the week, and post our reviews on Sunday. Want to join the musical adventure?
