2 Tone Special

This fortnight we are listening to 2 Tone, a genre that developed in Coventry during the late 1970’s. Popular among skinheads, the genre is often described as the second wave of ska. The sound combines ska, punk and New Wave – all genres we have already encountered on our musical adventure.  Most 2 Tone artists were at some point signed to 2 Tone Records, hence the name, and this week’s album is no different. Specials is the 1979 debut album by The Specials. The label was in fact founded by The Specials’ keyboardist Jerry Dammers.

Each fortnight Fran and Dave explore a new genre from the Music Tree by choosing an album to represent it. We write about the genre or artist during the fortnight, and post our reviews on Sunday (although while Dave is in Italia, don’t expect this schedule to be adhered to closely!). Want to join the musical adventure? Listen along with our Spotify playlist, and subscribe by clicking the link in the sidebar to get an email every time there’s a new post.
