Hip House Party – Dave’s Review

Blending old school hip hop and classic house, Beatmasters’ Anywayawanna is upbeat, bouncy and fun.

Piano chords and steady beats, the key elements of the classic house style, form the basis of most songs, allowing the varied cast of vocalists to take the limelight. There are many strong vocal performances, particularly those of P.P. Arnold on the laid-back Make Me Feel and the full-of-attitude Betty Boo on Hey DJ – I Can’t Dance To That Music You’re Playing.

While early 80’s hip house can seem a little simple musically at times, with its zappy sounds and simple beats, the album is surprisingly diverse: Ska Train is a great ska song; and Sarayet-Sayem Sembtae continually switches between samba party, tragic trumpet and answer-phone message.
