The first few times I listened to Julia Holter’s Loud City Song, I fell asleep before the end. On first impressions this album does not have much going on. It is very slowly paced, and although Holter has a pleasant voice, it is somewhat soporific!
If you’re willing to really commit to Loud City Song, the homogenous gentle sounds begin to be distinguishable after a while, and it starts to give back. There are a few tracks that are more enjoyable once you’ve settled into the record. In The Green Wild especially has a nice jazzy feel and some good rhythms.
I have nothing in particular against Loud City Song, but I don’t think I’m likely to listen to it again!
